: Behind the Scenes : Costumes

Here are early descriptions of many of the costumes that would be designed for Astronuts. Many of these initial concepts, dating from late 2000, would differ greatly from the finished products, which were ready for shooting in April 2001.

Captain Flak T. Flotsam Gray Dickies coveralls with pants legs stuffed into black, calf-high boots. A "magic 8 ball" patch on one shoulder, and a Cub Scouts "Pinewood Derby" patch on the other shoulder. A gold band around each sleeve. A green-brown fly fisherman's vest with three gold star patches on a left front pocket, and "FLAK T. FLOTSAM" in large, white letters on the back of the vest. A belt worn loosely around the waist for carrying field equipment. The Astrogalactic Heroes for Hire communicator badge would be worn on the left breast of the vest.
Doodad A special-effects costume. A bluescreen-colored bodysuit with a non-blue, constructed robotic body that is attached to the bodysuit at the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, waist, hips, knees, and ankles. Robotic body to consist of lightweight materials like cardboard and hollow, plastic piping for the body, arms, and legs. Boxy feet constructed from cardboard, to be worn over shoes. Bulky gloves to serve as robot hands. Silver makeup on face. Overall look of Doodad will resemble a lanky, boxy robot. Full effect of costume requires filming actor in front of bluescreen; during scenes "off-ship", a simple costume that covers the body will be worn; this costume will be a two-way "containment suit" that (a) protects Doodad's body from the elements, and (b) protects the environment from Doodad's leaky nuclear reactor. The Astrogalactic Heroes for Hire communicator badge would be worn on the left breast.

Chip Johnson Green coveralls, sneakers, and an Old Navy "sailor's" vest. The Astrogalactic Heroes for Hire communicator badge would be worn on the left breast.
Six of One A sexy but non-revealing costume. Main costume may be black, over which a white lab coat may be worn. Character may wear a belt of archaic medical instruments, blades, and other scary stuff. May wear welder's rubber gloves. The Astrogalactic Heroes for Hire communicator badge would be worn on the left breast.
Major Dinero Fleece A flashy suit, possibly with metallic trim, accessories, and/or jewelry. The Astrogalactic Heroes for Hire communicator badge would be worn on the left breast. Dinero's badge may be flashy, possibly covered with gold glitter.
Montgomery "Monty" MacGuffin A plaid, Scottish kilt with a contrasting, plaid flannel shirt. A fisherman's vest worn over the shirt. Character might carry a comic book poorly hidden inside a STARSHIP MECHANICS FOR DUMMIES book. Wears a tool belt of some kind; may carry a handheld video game that some think to be a diagnostic tool. The Astrogalactic Heroes for Hire communicator badge would be worn on the left breast.
Lieutenant Thugg A granny dress with a cardigan, lacy warrior's sash, combat boots, combat helmet possibly adorned with bows. The Astrogalactic Heroes for Hire communicator badge would be worn on the left breast.
Gummia Snax Evening wear-like dress with a slit running partway up each leg. During her "old gummi worm" moods, the slits would be fastened shut (buttoned, zipped, etc.); during her "young woman" moods, the slits would be partially or fully unfastened. The Astrogalactic Heroes for Hire communicator badge would be worn on the left breast.
